The eighteenth party - St Patrick’s day

Written by Arty Farty Film Party on March 9th, 2010

Hands up who forgot how good Goodfellas is? I haven’t seen it for years, and it’s just so well shot - that scene through the Copacabana is incredible!

So next Wednesday it’s St Patrick’s day, and in honour of the emerald isle and all things green we’re asking you to pick your favourite film starring… an Irish actor as a main character! It’s quite a mixed a bag of films and these are just the ones that we could think of - so get your thinking caps on and add some more!

The seventeenth party…

Written by Arty Farty Film Party on February 27th, 2010

Thanks to everyone that came down to watch the Governor and friends go for a rumble in the jungle.

This week we’re continuing the macho theme with New York settings, loners struggling with inner demons, pointed-shoes rock-meets-opera soundtracks and unrelenting cathartic violence. Yes that’s right, we’re celebrating the big daddy of celluloid… Martin Scorsese! I love every single one of the films in this poll, so I’m going to have a tough time choosing my favourite - hopefully you guys won’t though, get voting!

The sixteenth party…

David Bowie in spandex - what a treat! Thanks to everyone who came down for Jim Henson’s classic ‘Labyrinth’, it was ace to see a childhood favourite on big(ish) screen instead of on a 14″ portable and VHS in my teddy bear-filled bedroom.

This week we’re going to be getting all macho, with the most butch, right-wing yet homo-erotic genre of all time… 1980’s action films! Arnie, Stallone, Van Damme, Bruce - they just don’t make em so buff these days! Choose your favourite hero and watch him triumph over machines/aliens/terrorists/criminals/otherscarythings - get voting!

The fifteenth party…

Written by Arty Farty Film Party on January 25th, 2010

Thank you to everyone that came down for last week’s Studio Ghibli night. We were over the moon to have had such a good atmosphere, and hope that will be the first of many successful Arty Farty Film Parties in 2010!

And now for a bit of an admin note. Up until now, Arty Farty Film Party has been a completely free event. From this party onward, we’re going to be asking our lovely audience to part with just a couple of pounds as a donation. This donation will ensure that we are able to keep Arty Farty Film Party in a venue, and can continue to bring you the films you love.

After a request from one of the audience last week, we’re going to go with something light-hearted and choreographically fantastic for the next event. You either love them or hate them (or have them as a secret guilty pleasure), yes we’re screening your choice of 1980’s musical films! The 80’s are an absolutely brilliant decade for musicals - and we don’t just mean West-End type productions. Apply the term more liberally “films with musical interludes” should do the trick. There are loads to pick from, so if you have a favourite that’s not on the poll list, just add it on.

What a dump. When I think of castles, it’s not what I picture.

Written by Arty Farty Film Party on January 20th, 2010

We’re really excited about tonight’s film party, the first of 2010. It was a right old tussle of a poll, and in the end Howl’s Moving Castle emerged victorious!

Fargo

Howl's Moving Castle

Howl’s Moving Castle (or Hauru no ugoku shirofor those of you whole speak Japanese) is about a young woman put under a curse by a witch, which sees her body transform into that of an old lady. Her only hope of reverting to her youthful self is Howl - a young wizard, who travels through time and kingdoms in his castle. Which naturally, has legs. It’s bizarre. It’s brilliant.

Doors are at 7pm, film at 7:30pm sharp at An Outlet on Dale Street. Remember there’s a very limited seating capacity (30) so make sure you get there on time to avoid disappointment.

There will be fine wine, and lovely bottled beers to purchase, as well as popcorn, nachos and penny sweets if you’re feeling peckish. And as always entrance is 100% free.

We hope to see you there!

The fourteenth party…

Written by Arty Farty Film Party on January 12th, 2010

A happy new year to one and all! We hope you’ve had a lovely festive season, and that you’re as ready and raring to get back into Arty Farty Film Party for 2010 as we are.

For our 14th party we’re taking a trip to Japan to experience the imagination, brilliance and at times the down right bizarreness of Studio Ghibli. I remember the first of their films that I ever watched - Spirited Away - I’d never seen anything like it before, and I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it in the animated world since. They are truly breathtaking films, visually stunning with beautifully crafted stories. I’m not going to lie, we’re excited about this one!

The thirteenth party…

Written by Arty Farty Film Party on December 1st, 2009

Greetings film fans! You may have spotted that there has been no poll up last week. That’s because myself and Cat have been away in St Petersburg looking at lots of art and drinking lots of vodka - with no internet access. Due to the short time scale, we’re going to have to ditch the poll for this party and just go with a plain old screening.

We’ve chosen Wes Anderson’s all star line up…The Royal Tenenbaums! It’s one of our favourite films, and after some pretty dark films of late we thought we’d lighten the mood with this dysfunctional family comedy.

Thanks to everyone who came down to our bonfire night special for Serpico. We hope you enjoyed your sparklers!

Last week’s poll was a 2 horse race, and I think we had an all time record for number of votes placed (into the 70’s!). But we’re happy to announce that the winner (by a single vote) is Fargo!

Fargo

Fargo

After several requests we decided to have a Coen brothers’ night, and Fargo really is the marmite of their repertoire. It won 2 Oscars and has a storming cast including William H. Macy, Frances McDormand and the legendary Steve Buscemi - so come down tomorrow, Weds 18th November - and make your own mind up if you haven’t already seen it!

Doors are at 7pm, film at 7:30pm sharp at An Outlet on Dale Street. Remember there’s a very limited seating capacity (30) so make sure you get there on time to avoid disappointment.

There will be £6 bottles of red and white wine available to purchase, as well as a range of lovely bottled beers, popcorn, nachos and penny sweets. And as always entrance is 100% free.

The twelfth party…

Written by Arty Farty Film Party on November 10th, 2009

Hi there guys, thanks to you who came down last week and got yourself a sparkler in the interval. Serpico, good film worth watching if only to see Al Pacino in flares and a V neck! Not his best look.

Next week at the 12th Arty Farty were going to be celebrating the coolest bro’s on the block in our Coen Brothers evening . It will be a tough job we know, how to choose just one film out of all the gems they have produced over the years?

THE POLL IS NOW CLOSED AND THE WINNER IS… FARGO!

You know what they say, don’t you? If you love a man’s garden, you gotta love the man!

Written by Arty Farty Film Party on November 2nd, 2009

So there was a pretty even spread of votes this time, and the winner by a single vote is Serpico!

The Wrestler

Serpico

A year after her made his mark on the big screen with The Godfather, Al Pacino returned with a gritty portrayal of an honest NY cop being turned against by his corrupt peers. Pacino’s acting is smooooooooth and it’s directed by the legendary Sidney Lumet, a winning combo you really shouldn’t miss.

Come on down to our pre-bonfire night Arty Farty Film Party this Weds 4th November to celebrate the failure of the gunpowder plot. We’re also going to have a sparkler party in the interval, so make sure you bring a pair of gloves with you!

Doors are at 7pm, film at 7:30pm sharp at An Outlet on Dale Street. Remember there’s a very limited seating capacity (30) so make sure you get there on time to avoid disappointment.
